Is the Invisalign® orthodontic treatment effective?

Invisalign® is a brand name for a type of orthodontic treatment which are commonly known as aligners or clear aligners.  They are a sequence of transparent, flexible, and removable plates which are worn all day and night except when eating to gradually move the teeth in to a better position.

Many people think that Invisalign® treatment can replace traditional braces in all situations but that is not strictly true. Every orthodontic case is slightly different and requires various movements of the teeth in order to achieve the desired result for the patient. Braces can move the teeth in all directions and is the quickest and most economical way to treat patients with crooked, crowded or spaced teeth.  Specialist orthodontists are in general agreement that traditional braces are the preferred treatment modality and the only reason that Invisalign® type treatments are chosen by patients is that the patient doesn’t like the appearance of braces. Invisalign® treatment can take up to 50% longer treatment time and can be up to twice the cost when compared to traditional braces (depending on the case).

In reality, it’s up to the experts to inform patients about the various options for treatment to achieve the patients’ goals for an improved smile and teeth which have optimal function in the long term.
