What is a Dental Therapist?
- Specializes with children - 1-25 years old
- Someone trained to deal with children and their special needs
- Can spend time with their patient to deal with their particular needs, such as anxiety and helps introduce and familiarize the children with the dental environment.
- Can examine and treat disease of the teeth in preschool, primary and secondary school children, under the general supervision of dentists
- Can treat patients up to and including age 25
What tasks can a Dental Therapist perform on me or my children?
Our Dental Therapists can educate and motivate children, either on a personal basis in the clinic or through classroom lessons to maintain good oral health. We can assist in educating the community in the principles of preventive dentistry by addresses adult groups such as parent groups, play groups and parents and citizen associations.
Our highly trained staff can provide routine dental treatment for children including:
- Dental examinations and diagnosis
- Cleaning, scaling and polishing teeth
- Administering anaesthetic
- Filling cavities in baby and adult teeth
- Extracting deciduous (baby) teeth under local anaesthetic
- Treating gum conditions
- Taking x-rays of teeth and jaws
- Applying pit and fissure sealants and fluoride therapy
- Taking impressions for mouthguard construction
